Finalist

I spent a bit more energy than usual this past fall submitting essays to various journals and contests. One very short essay was recently a finalist in the Writing X Writers short short contest whose winners receive tuition to WxW’s upcoming writing workshops. As a finalist, I received a lovely partial scholarship, and I’m excited to make use of it next weekend at Get The Lead Out generative workshop with Pam Houston, Lidia Yuknavitch, and Keenan Norris. That short essay finalist is submitted elsewhere now, seeking a published home, but the image above is a hint about its subject matter.

This morning I received another submission notice, and again, I am a finalist! One chapter of my memoir-in-progress was deemed a finalist in Cutthroat Magazine’s Barry Lopez Creative Nonfiction contest. This time, my essay is being considered for publication in Cutthroat‘s upcoming issue. Either way, it feels like things are moving in the right direction. The blue “In-Progress” rectangle in Submittable turned gray as usual, but instead of “Declined” it just said “Completed” which was a nice upgrade.

In other news, I’m getting the hang of restacking my favorite reads on Substack, so look me up if you’re there and I’ll follow you back. I also set up a GoodReads account (yes, finally got around to it), and plan to be more diligent about reviewing the many books I’ve been reading lately.
