Mary Beth Rew Hicks is a marine biologist and writer on the Oregon coast. A creative nonfiction graduate of the Mountainview MFA of Southern New Hampshire University, she is working on a memoir about women and whales. Her memoir chapter, “Mothership,” was a finalist for the 2023 Barry Lopez Creative Nonfiction Contest of Cutthroat Magazine, and is published in their Taking Liberties anthology. Another memoir chapter was a finalist for the 2024 december magazine creative nonfiction contest. Her pandemic journal was featured in the “Women Writing History” project by the National Women’s History Museum, and she has essays in Selkie and Assignment.
